FIRSTS
· Norma Shearer might have been in the awkward position of announcing herself as a winner. As a result, this was the first and last time a nominated actress/actor presented an award for his/her category.
· Cimarron's claim as the only Western to win Best Picture held for sixty years, until Dances With Wolves also earned that distinction in 1990.
· Jackie Cooper's vehicle, Skippy, was unquestionably the first and only time a peanut butter was named after a movie.

RULE CHANGES
· "Scientific or Technical Awards" added.
· "Production" become "Picture" so that voters won't judge films solely on the basis of size and logistics.
· Writing Award split back into "Adaptation" and "Original Story."
· Sound Recording Award given to studio sound department without reference to individual films. Each studio could submit up to 5 films to the Sound Committee, which made 4 nominations. Academy members "in good standing" vote on final ballot.

SINS OF OMISSION
Picture: City Lights, Little Caesar, The Public Enemy, The Blue Angel, Dracula
Actor: James Cagney - The Public Enemy, Edward G. Robinson - Little Caesar

UNMENTIONABLES
· Skippy director, Norman Taurog, ordered his nephew, Jackie Cooper, to cry on cue of he'd shoot his dog.
· The award-winning cinematographer for Tabu, Floyd Crosby, was the father of rock musician David Crosby.
· Marie Dressler was set to take a job as a housekeeper before she got her first break in the movies.
· Lionel Barrymore's excrusciating arthritis was alleviated by MGM boss, Louis B. Mayer. "L.B. gets me $400 worth of cocaine a day to ease my pain," Barrymore is said to have remarked. "I don't know where he gets it. And I don't care. But I bless him every time it puts me to sleep."
· The Oscar®-winning screenwriter for The Dawn Patrol, John Monk Saunders, was the husband of King Kong's main squeeze, Fay Wray.
· Marlene Dietrich took Hollywood by storm, and many of its biggest stars -- both male and female -- into her bedroom. One of those who took a pass was Mae West, who characteristically quipped, "She wanted to wash my hair, and I didn't think she meant the hair on my head."
