FIRSTS
· Steven Sodergergh's double Best Director nomination was the first since Michael Curtiz's for 1938. (Curtiz won for neither Angels with Dirty Faces nor Four Daughters.)
· For the first time since The Greatest Show on Earth (1951), the Best Picture winner failed to pick up another Award for director or screenplay.

ROLE REVERSALS
The role of Gladiator's Maximus was originally offered to Mel Gibson.

SINS OF OMISSION
Julia Roberts thanked everyone in her acceptance speech except the real Erin Brockovich. When she was later reminded of her gaffe, Roberts promised to "send her something special."

UNMENTIONABLES
· Oliver Reed died before his scenes in Gladiator were completed. His head was superimposed on a stand-in's body.
· In addition to the Best Actor Oscar®, Russell Crowe was rewarded for his work with a broken foot bone, a fractured hip and a punctured cheek.
· A chorus of "foul play" went up when deep-pocketed Miramax was accused of "buying" the Best Picture nomination for Chocolat.
· Presenter Kevin Spacey left his tuxedo in Nova Scotia, where he was filming The Shipping News. Judi Dench carried the tux with her on her flight to Los Angeles so Spacey would have something to wear at the Awards ceremony.
· As an incentive to keep the show's running time short, a HD television was offered to whoever gave the shortest acceptance speech. The prize went to Michael Dudok de Wit, who won - interestingly enough - for Best Animated Short.
