FIRSTS
· The Awards show is moved to the Kodak Theatre, back to Hollywood for the first time since 1959.
· Halle Berry is honored as the first African-American woman to win Best Actress.
· Denzel Washington is, in fact, the first African-American man to win Best Actor. (Sidney Poitier was born in the Caribbean of Jamaican heritage.)
· After 20 nominations and 3 Awards, Woody Allen appears at the Awards to introduce a film tribute to New York City.

RULE CHANGES
· Animated Feauture Film added as a new category.
· Music categories & Sound Effects Editing renamed.

ALWAYS A BRIDESMAID...
After 15 unsuccessful nominations for Original Song and Original Score, Randy Newman takes home his first Oscar® for "If I Didn't Have You" from Monsters, Inc..

SINS OF OMISSION
Picture: Mulholland Drive, Ghost World
Actress: Naomi Watts - Mulholland Drive, Tilda Swinton - The Deep End
Supporting Actor: Steve Buscemi - Ghost World, Jude Law - A.I.

UNMENTIONABLES
· In the final days of the campaign for Academy votes, a well-orchestrated smear campaign was launched against Best Picture front-runner A Beautiful Mind. It was asserted that its creators deleted certain facts from the biopic of Nobel Laureate John Nash. Anonymous leaks to the media claimed he was an adulterous bisexual and a rabid anti-Semite.
· Russell Crowe all but had the Best Actor statuette wrapped up. But his bad-boy antics -- such as his highly publicized blow-up at the BAFTA Awards show when he went ballistic because his speech was cut off -- caused Academy voters to reconsider their ballots.
· Halle Berry was named after a Cleveland department store. A severe beating at the hands of an ex-lover left Berry with a partial hearing loss. In 2000, Berry left the scene of a serious auto accident, claiming temporary amnesia.
· As a floundering 20-year-old, Denzel Washington was inspired by a spiritual prophet who foretold his stardom. According to a 1995 Premiere magazine article, Washington confronted Quentin Tarantino on the set of Crimson Tide and lambasted the director for the use of racial slurs in his films. The embarrassed Tarantino tried to move the argument to a quieter place. "No," said Washington, "if we're going to discuss it, let's discuss it now." Washington later assured reporters that he believed Tarantino was "a fine artist."
· Jennifer Connelly, on how it felt to win her first Oscar®: "Well, it doesn't suck." Her de-energized state as she climbed the stairs to accept the award was perhaps due to the fact that she'd broken up with her boyfriend, Josh Charles, just hours earlier.
· Hersholt presenter Ryan O'Neal was outraged by unfounded rumors that he was at death's door. He admitted that the upside was being hit on by so many women who thought they'd have one last shot at him.
