Opening: Tom Cruise addresses the audience about the propriety of celebrating in the wake of the 9/11 tragedy and sets the theme of the evening: "The Magic of the Movies". He introduces a short film segment by Errol Morris on "What's your favorite movie?" and "What do the movies mean to you?"Host Whoopi Goldberg enters on a trapeze in a costume from Moulin Rouge! and performs a 3-and-a-half-minute standup introduction.
