Sorrell and Son
US (1927): Drama/Silent
Herbert Brenon adapted Warwick Deeping's novel and directed this classic silent drama that follows the story of a World War I veteran who returns home to raise his son after he finds that his wife has left him. Captain Sorrell (H.B. Warner) devotes his life to raising his son Kit (Mickey McBan), who grows up to be a successful doctor (Nils Asther). In old age the elder Sorrell is stricken with cancer, and the son -- knowing the ravages of the disease -- sorrowfully euthanizes his father to prevent his suffering. Highly controversial at the time, the film won director Herbert Brenon an Oscar® nomination. (amctv.com)
