The Valiant

US (1928): Drama/Silent (w. talking sequences)

This is an effective performance of a famous one-act play about a man condemned to execution who may or may not be the son and brother who ran away years ago. In long confrontation scenes with possible sister and mom, Paul Muni as the hero convinces them that he is not their brother/son and gives each new hope to go on with their lives. William K. Howard directs Muni to the first of his five Best Actor nominations; other cast members include Marguerite Churchill, DeWitt Jennings and Johnny Mack Brown. (Arne Andersen, IMDb)
