US (1930): Comedy/Drama
Ann Harding portrays a young New Yorker from a conservative family who tries to win the heart of her sister's free-thinking fiance. Johnny Case (Robert Case) is a young go-getter on Wall Street, engaged to be married to Julia Seton (Mary Astor), daughter of a family who will no doubt raise his social status among the New York elite. But when Julia's liberated sister Linda (Harding), the black sheep of her family, becomes fond of him, he rethinks the direction of his life, and with the help of friend Nick Potter (Edward Everett Horton), finds his way into Linda's arms. Edward H. Griffith directs this Pathé release. (amctv.com)
Harding radiates in this first film version of Philip Barry's classic comedy. Although this film is best known for its 1938 remake with Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn, this first talkie version is just as fine an adaptation of the play, but with the added distinction of the vibrant, natural and completely beguiling performance of Harding as Linda (she earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress). Sadly, the film exists only as an archive print in D.C.'s Library of Congress. (Arne Andersen, IMDb)
