Whoopee!

US (1930): Musical/Comedy/Dance

Western sheriff Bob Wells (Jack Rutherford) is preparing to marry Sally Morgan (Eleanor Hunt); she loves part-Indian Wanenis (Paul Gregory), whose race is an obstacle. Sally flees the wedding with hypochondriac Henry Williams (Eddie Cantor), who thinks he's just giving her a ride; but she left a note saying they've eloped! Chasing them are jilted Bob, Henry's nurse Mary (Ethel Shutta) (who's been trying to seduce him) and many others. (Rod Crawford, IMDb)

Thornton Freeland directs this Goldwyn Co. production, shot in 2-strip Technicolor. Showman Florenz Ziegfeld lost everything in the crash of 1929. At the time, his production of "Whoopee" was playing to full houses on Broadway. To bail himself out, Ziegfeld closed the show (which could have run another year) and sold the movie rights to Sam Goldwyn.
