Mary Barrett (Grace Moore) is an aspiring opera singer who is taken under the wing of a famous operatic maestro, Guilio Monterverdi (Tullio Carminati). After spending endless working hours together and arguing, their relationship develops into love. But, jealousy and misunderstandings prevent Mary and Guilio from acknowledging their true feelings. Grace Moore sings a number of songs in the picture. In addition to Schertzinger's title song, she sings "Ciri-Biri-Bin" and "The Last Rose of Summer". She shows her operatic chops with arias such as "Un bel di" from Puccini's "Madame Butterfly", "Habanera" from Bizet's "Carmen", "Sempre libera" and "Ah! fors' è lui" from Verdi's "La Traviata", and she joins in the sextet "Chi mi frena" from Donizetti's "Lucia di Lammermoor".
