Mary Rutledge (Miriam Hopkins) arrives from the east, finds her fiance dead, and goes to work at the roulette wheel of Louis Charnalis' (Edward G. Robinson) Bella Donna, a rowdy gambling house in San Francisco in the 1850s. She falls in love with miner Carmichael (Joel McCrea) and takes his gold dust at the wheel. William Wyler began shooting, but he was replaced by Howard Hawks, who received sole screen credit for directing. The Ben Hecht-Charles MacArthur script also features Walter Brennan, Brian Donlevy and Harry Carey for Goldwyn/UA.
