Les Misérables
US (1935): Drama
Directed by Richard Boleslawski for Fox, this is the best American telling of numerous versions of Victor Hugo's famous story about moral thievery and immoral justice. Fredric March steals bread, he repents and becomes a respectable public figure; Charles Laughton pursues him with a frightening vengeance. The cinematography by Gregg Toland is beautiful, the pacing is perfect, and the details are wonderful. And the story must be great; there have been ten film versions -- and one record-breaking Broadway musical -- made since this picture was released in 1935. (amctv.com)
