Valiant Is the Word for Carrie

US (1936): Drama

In this heart-tugging story, based on the novel of the same name by Barry Benefield, a wealthy prostitute with a heart of gold (Gladys George) takes in two orphaned children (Charlene Wyatt and Jackie Moran), and then sacrifices everything she has to give them a better life than she had. Though she protects them from the realities of her chosen profession, a criminal charge makes her face an impossible decision: jail, or a public trial that would forever taint the reputations of the now-grown children (Arline Judge and John Howard).

George's first starring role came about by accident -- originally hired to star in Go West, Young Man (1936), she lost that role to Mae West, and was offered Carrie as a consolation prize. It resulted in a nomination for the Best Actress Oscar®:. Wesley Ruggles directs this Paramount release that also features Harry Carey, Hattie McDaniel and Grady Sutton. (amctv.com)
