A Damsel in Distress

US (1937): Musical/Comedy/Dance

George Stevens directs this musical comedy from RKO based on the novel and play by P. G. Wodehouse, who also contributed to the screenplay. Lady Alyce Marshmorton (Joan Fontaine) must marry soon, and the staff of Tottney Castle have laid bets on who she'll choose, with young Albert (Harry Watson) wagering on "Mr. X." After Alyce goes to London to meet a beau -- bumping into dancer Jerry Halliday (Fred Astaire), instead -- she is restricted to the castle to curb her scandalous behavior. Albert then summons Jerry to Alyce's aid in order to "protect his investment." George Burns and Gracie Allen, Reginald Gardiner and Constance Collier are also featured. The Gershwin song score includes "Nice Work If You Can Get It," "A Foggy Day," and "Things Are Looking Up." (IMDb)
