US (1937): Comedy/Musical

This Grand National release, directed by Andrew L. Stone, is an oddity indeed. The flimsy plot revolves around the revenge of a bookie on a dance hall girl who takes him for a wad of dough. His elaborate plans are to make her believe he is getting her a job in a show and hoax her out of the lost money as she pays for lessons. Irene Hervey is bright and bouncy, Robert Armstrong his usual dull self. The supporting players are a down and out company of Gilbert and Sullivan interpreters who get to perform a few numbers throughout the film and end it with an extensive medley from The Mikado.
