| The Girl Said No (a.k.a. "With Words and Music") US (1937): Comedy/Musical
This Grand National release, directed by Andrew L. Stone, is an oddity indeed. The flimsy plot revolves around the revenge of a bookie on a dance hall girl who takes him for a wad of dough. His elaborate plans are to make her believe he is getting her a job in a show and hoax her out of the lost money as she pays for lessons. Irene Hervey is bright and bouncy, Robert Armstrong his usual dull self. The supporting players are a down and out company of Gilbert and Sullivan interpreters who get to perform a few numbers throughout the film and end it with an extensive medley from The Mikado. (This is the best part of the film and may have inspired the filming of the work by Universal two years later.) (IMDb)
