Maytime

US (1937): Romance/Musical

The past proves itself a truly foreign country when viewing this once popular, now neglected Nelson Eddy-Jeanette MacDonald vehicle. Here is a prime example of popular Depression-era entertainment, considered by aficionados as the pinnacle of the duo's career together, whose appeal is completely lost on contemporary audiences. He plays a poor singer, she a married opera star who meet in Paris and must deal with John Barrymore as the jealous husband. Filled with musical numbers including "Mammy's L'il Baby Loves Shortnin' Bread," "Will You Remember, Sweetheart?" and an uncalled for adaptation of Tchaikovsky's Fifth Symphony with modern lyrics. Originally directed by Edmund Goulding, but after two months of filming, MGM shut down production, a new script was written and a new director, Robert Z. Leonard, was assigned to the film.
