Night Must Fall

US (1937): Thriller

This fantastic thriller is adapted from Emlyn Williams' play. Robert Montgomery is terrifying as the creepy visitor toting a heavy hatbox. When he suddenly shows up at Dame May Whitty's cottage, Rosalind Russell begins to suspect he's connected with the disappearance of a female guest from a nearby inn. But she's the only one, as his charm seems to prevent anyone from seeing the truth. But when Whitty turns up dead, Russell knows whom to look for -- and what's in the hatbox.

Montgomery, one of the foremost light romantic leads of the 1930s, had to fight MGM head Louis B. Mayer to play the affable psychotic, "Babyface." Although Mayer hated the results, the film was a commercial and critical success. (amctv.com)
