The Prisoner of Zenda

US (1937): Romance/Adventure

The definitive adaptation (others were made in 1914, 1922, 1952, and 1979) of the Anthony Hope novel and Edward E. Rose play. This swashbuckling adventure tells the story of a commoner (Ronald Colman) thrust into the royal household when he is called upon to impersonate a look-alike king who has been kidnapped by a band of rebels. There he falls in love with a regal beauty (Madeleine Carroll). Two directors assisted John Cromwell in completing this Seznick/UA release: George Cukor directed the final love scene, while W.S. Van Dyke directed the famous duel between Colman and Douglas Fairbanks Jr. Supporting cast also includes C. Aubrey Smith, Raymond Massey, Mary Astor, David Niven and Montagu Love. (amctv.com)
