Quality Street

US (1937): Drama/Comedy

Katharine Hepburn's sterling performance elevates this adaptation of James M. Barrie's lighthearted turn-of-the-century play. In 1790s London, Hepburn attracts the affection of physician Franchot Tone before he does his duty in the protracted Napoleonic wars. By the time he returns many years later, Tone no longer recognizes the faithful Hepburn, who has settled into life as a spinster teacher. She masquerades as her 16-year-old niece in order to attract Tone's attention once again. An old chestnut at its time of release, this was produced as a silent in 1927 with Marion Davies. George Stevens directs this version for RKO, with a cast that includes Eric Blore, Fay Bainter, Estelle Winwood, Sidney Toler, Joan Fontaine and Bonita Granville. (amctv.com)
