Something to Sing About
US (1937): Musical/Comedy
James Cagney, on a loan-out from Warner Bros., gets to show off his hoofer's background as a bandleader looking for a big break in Hollywood. After beating the streets, he retreats to a cozy marriage with his former singer (Evelyn Daw), but after the happy couple return from their honeymoon, the studios dangle a movie contract... if he remains single. Victor Schertzinger wrote the story, produced and directed for Grand National Pictures. Supporting cast includes William Frawley and Gene Lockhart.
Something to Sing About did not have Cagney singing any happy songs. It bombed at the box office. Cagney had Jack Warner pay the bank debt of $500,000 as part of his deal to return to Warners. (amctv.com)
