The Adventures of Tom Sawyer
US (1938): Adventure
Sentiment rules in this version of the Twain tale of boyhood in 1850 Missouri, reasonably faithful except for minor details and making the character Jim a boy instead of a man. Includes the whitewash episode, puppy love, the graveyard murder, the boys' running away to Jackson's Island, the salvation of Muff Potter, and the cave adventure. Norman Taurog received directing credit for this Selznick/UA release that features a cast that includes Tommy Kelly, Jackie Moran, Ann Gillis, May Robson, Walter Brennan, Victor Jory and Margaret Hamilton. However, H. C. Potter was the original director, but he was fired and replaced by Taurog. George Cukor directed some scenes uncredited, and William A. Wellman provided uncredited retake direction. Legendary cinematographer James Wong Howe claimed he was banned from using Technicolor because of a bad rapport he had with that company during the making of this film. He did not use color again until 1949. (amctv.com)
