US (1938): War
Though describing itself as "The Most Important Film Of 1938!" may be a little much, this is nonetheless a moving romantic drama. It's the Spanish Civil War, and peasant farmer (Henry Fonda) takes up arms, somewhat reluctantly, in order to defend his family's farm. Madeline Carroll plays the Russian visitor with whom he falls in love. Directed by William Dieterle for Wanger/UA.
