Breaking the Ice

US (1938): Drama/Musical

Tommy (Bobby Breen), roughly ten years of age, runs off with a con-artist with the desire to raise some money so that he and his widowed mother can move out West near a man who is more than a bit interested in playing the role of his "pa." Trouble is, once Breen's voice is recognized, his "partner" opts to play manager and takes four-fifths of the lad's earnings. But, when Tommy finally makes it back home, the greedy fellow has a change of heart, helps the lad prove himself innocent of swiping $20, a nasty rumor that has put our hero to shame. This RKO release, directed by Edward F. Cline, also features Charles Ruggles, Dolores Costello, Billy Gilbert and Margaret Hamilton. (CVMC)
