The Buccaneer
US (1938): Historical/War
Heroism, romance and betrayal make this historical drama an engaging spectacle. Frederic March shows a surprising amount of passion as pirate Jean Lafitte, who abandons his life of crime to aid General Andrew Jackson in the War of 1812. After helping the Yanks defend his beloved New Orleans against a British invasion, Lafitte is nearly decorated for his heroism, but falls into ignominy again when a former love (Margot Grahame) reveals that his buccaneers have returned to their pirate ways. Accepting the inevitable with a swashbuckling grace, Lafitte rejoins them, this time with a beautiful new love (Franciska Gaal). The film also feature Walter Brennan and Akim Tamiroff.
Anthony Quinn, son-in-law of producer/director Cecil D. DeMille, had a minor part as Beluche in the picture, an adaptation of the book Lafitte the Pirate, and was the director of the 1958 remake. (amctv.com)
