The Goldwyn Follies
US (1938): Musical/Comedy/Dance
This elaborate musical extravaganza centers around a Hollywood producer (Adolphe Menjou) who hires an ordinary person (Andrea Leeds) to be "Miss Humanity" and preview his movies before the public sees them. There are about a gazillion star cameos, a Ben Hecht script, and lots of tunes by George and Ira Gershwin, but the proceedings are still pretty silly. Fans of the Ritz Brothers take note. Future tough guy star Alan Ladd appears briefly in film as an off-key auditioning actor. Directed by George Marshall and H.C. Potter (uncredited) for Goldwyn/UA. After watching this film, one is left with a single question: "What were they thinking?" (amctv.com)
