The Great Waltz

US (1938): Musical

A film biography of composer Johann Strauss, which is also a fine romantic musical comedy. The alluring Luise Rainer is the apex of a romantic triangle that serves as a backdrop for the stirring score. Several actors were considered to play Johann Strauss; Nelson Eddy, Francis Lederer, Clifton Webb and Fredric March were all proposed for the role before MGM eventually settled on Fernand Gravet. Julien Duvivier and Victor Fleming direct a cast that also includes Miliza Korjus, Hugh Herbert, Lionel Atwill, Minna Gombell and Herman Bing. Far more compelling than the 1972 version. (amctv.com)
