Merrily We Live

US (1938): Comedy

A delightful, less well known screwball comedy directed by Norman Z. McLeod for Hal Roach/MGM. Cynical writer Brian Aherne unwittingly infiltrates a loony house of philanthropists. Mrs. Emily Kilbourne (Billie Burke) runs a household that, due to her charitable nature, is as much hobo jungle as happy home. When he joins the menage, Aherne falls head over heels in love with Constance Bennett, the eldest daughter. Cast includes Alan Mowbray, Patsy Kelly, Ann Dvorak, Tom Brown, Bonita Granville and Marjorie Rambeau. TV variety show host Ed Sullivan was hired to write additional dialogue for the film. Sullivan was a well-known newspaper columnist at the time. (amctv.com)
