Spawn of the North

Alaskan salmon fishermen Henry Fonda and George Raft find themselves in a face-off when Raft joins a Russian salmon-poaching gang. The plot simply transports the standard Western fare to the chilly waters of Alaska, but director Henry Hathaway's keen eye makes this easy sailing. Supporting cast includes Dorothy Lamour, Akim Tamiroff, John Barrymore, Fuzzy Knight and Vladimir Sokoloff.
Paramount Studios constructed a steel and concrete tank for the film that held 375,000 gallons of water, in which fishing boats and power cruisers were launched for close range shots. (amctv.com)
