Storm over Bengal

US (1938): Adventure/War

This is a typical Republic Studios actioner, filmed in the Hollywood hills and looking for all the world like a Western that just happens to take place in India. The plot is simple: The Maharajah is dying and wicked underlings plot to overthrow the British Raj once he dies. Patric Knowles plays the dashing spy lead, Jeffrey Allison, who must put new bride aside to save British India. Richard Cromwell plays his brother who is secretly in love with his brother's fiancée. Cromwell has a habit of rushing to the rescue in airplanes that crash (in Marie Dressler's Emma he did the same); he could never act and manages to prove that point over and over. Rochelle Hudson is pretty and pert as the love interest, and the action is typical of its day. The score is competent for a B actioner but did not deserve its Academy Award nomination. [These were the days when any studio could submit a film in the sonic categories (Sound, Song, Score, Scoring) and be guaranteed an Oscar® nom, deserving or not.] (Arne Andersen, IMDb)
