Suez
US (1938): Adventure/Drama/Romance
This is an elaborately constructed myth about Ferdinand de Lesseps (Tyrone Power), the man who conceived of the Suez Canal and persevered until it was constructed. His struggle is shadowed by his relationship with Loretta Young, a courtesan who became the Empress Eugénie, and his first backer. Useless as history, but Allan Dwan's characteristic brio with exotic action is apparent and the leads are attractive. The story is far enough off the mark that the de Lesseps family sued Dwan and Fox Studios, claiming that the film besmirched the family name by suggesting Ferdinand made advances on Empress Eugénie. The case was thrown out of court. (amctv.com)
