That Certain Age
US (1938): Musical/Comedy
In a winning Deanna Durbin vehicle, the young singer is infatuated with her family's houseguest, Melvyn Douglas, a handsome journalist who is older, wiser, and charming. This doesn't bode well for Durbin's boyfriend (Jackie Cooper), who is soon out on the curb, unable to compete. Douglas slyly uses the crush to get out of social obligations, but steers her gently back to her hometown beau. The memorable musical numbers include the Oscar®-nominated "My Own." Edward Ludwig directs this Charles Brackett/F. Hugh Herbert/Billy Wilder script for Universal.
In 1939 Durbin was given a special juvenile Oscar® for her work in both That Certain Age and the musical Mad About Music. That year she was earning $250,000 annually. (amctv.com)
