Tropic Holiday

US (1938): Musical

This is a grade B musical set in Mexico. Ray Milland is a Hollywood writer who is sent to Mexico to learn about romance, although he is engaged to a star (Binnie Barnes). He falls for native Dorothy Lamour and the star comes to fetch him. The score is delightful and deserved its Oscar® nom, but all else is rather dull going. Even Martha Raye trying valiantly can't evoke a single laugh. That's saying a lot against the material. Theodore Reed directs this Paramount release. (Arne Andersen, IMDb)
