Beau Geste
US (1939): Adventure/War
An oft-remade adventure tale tells the story of three brothers who "confess" to stealing a rare gem in order to save the female culprit. The brothers in arms battle the elements and their enemies to live long enough to clear the family name. The haunting opening sequence in which a relief column of French Foreign Legionnaires soldiers crosses the Saharan desert dunes, arriving at a strangely silent Fort Zinderneuf is one of the most famous in film. (The film was shot on location near Yuma, Arizona.)
Gary Cooper plays the title role, and Ray Milland and Robert Preston play his brothers, John and Digby. Brian Donleavy shines as the brutal Sgt. Markoff. Other cast members include Susan Hayward, J. Carrol Naish, Albert Dekker, Broderick Crawford and James Stephenson. William A. Wellman directs the action for Paramount. (amctv.com)
