First Love

US (1939): Comedy/Musical

Henry Koster directs this Deanna Durbin vehicle that reworks the Cinderella theme. Orphaned Connie Harding (Durbin) is sent to live with her rich aunt and uncle after graduating from boarding school. Robert Stack plays her romantic interest and gives Durbin her first screen kiss -- a source of major publicity from Universal for the film at the time. This film marked a major transition for Durbin, with the studio shifting her from "child" star to ingenue. She plays much more subtly in this picture than she had in many of her earlier films -- signalling that she was now "maturer," instead of being a juvenile whirlwind ball of enery like she had been in Three Smart Girls and One Hundred Men and a Girl.
