US (1939): Biography

The newly named emperor Maximilian (Brian Aherne) and his wife Carolotta (Bette Davis) arrive in Mexico to face popular sentiment favoring Benito Juraez (Paul Muni) and democracy. Maximilian tries to appease the Mexicans but fails. Abraham Lincoln is supporting Juarez and asks the French to withdraw support for Maximilian. Carlotta goes to France to plead with Napoleon III (Claude Rains), to no avail. William Dieterle directs a strong Warner Bros. cast that also includes John Gafield, Donald Crisp, Gale Sondergaard, Gilbert Roland, Harry Davenport and Louis Calhern. (IMDb)
