Of Mice and Men

US (1939): Drama

In this adaptation of John Steinback's dark, richly textured masterpiece, the uncertainties of the Depression-era world resonate in the story of two drifters who cling to the dream of their own ranch. Burgess Meredith plays the self-appointed guardian of the innocent, slow, but potentially dangerous Lon Chaney Jr., who gives perhaps his finest performance. Their comforting fantasy of a better life is shattered by the ugly realities of the ranch where they find work: a tormenting ranch owner (Bob Steele), the cruel foreman, and his promiscuous wife (Betty Field). Lewis Milestone directs a cast that also includes Charles Bickford, Roman Bohnen and Noah Beery Jr. (amctv.com)
