The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex

US (1939): Drama

Michael Curtiz directs an all-star cast in a lavish Warner Bros. historical epic that featured as many fireworks on the set between Bette Davis and Errol Flynn as appeared on-screen. She campaigned to have him replaced by Laurence Olivier. Davis makes an imperious Elizabeth who is both drawn to and suspicious of the dashing Essex (Flynn), who returns in triumph from Spain. The cast includes Olivia de Havilland, Donald Crisp, Alan Hale, Vincent Price, Henry Stephenson, James Stephenson, Nanette Fabray and Leo G. Carroll. (amctv.com)
