Angels Over Broadway
US (1940): Drama/Comedy/Crime
Ben Hecht based Angels Over Broadway (Columbia) on a 1923 encounter with a stranger who bought him and other writers dinner in a restaurant. The following day, Hecht learned the man had committed suicide, and wrote up the story for his newspaper column. In this film, Hecht brings to life the world of loners, two-bit hustlers, and has-beens that populate Times Square. Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., plans to swindle a suicidal thief, but then plots with call girl Rita Hayworth to turn his life around. Great cast in an unusually black comedy for its time includes Thomas Mitchell, John Qualen, George Watts, Ralph Theodore, Eddie Foster, Jack Roper and Constance Worth. (amctv.com)
