John Wayne (a year after his leap to recognition in Stagecoach) is sheriff of a Kansas town besieged by a pro-Confederacy gang led by Walter Pidgeon. Claire Trevor (another Stagecoach alum) is the love interest caught between the two. With Roy Rogers, Gabby Hayes, and stunts by Yakima Canutt, who pulls off one of his most famous feats in this film: a quartet of men and a team of horses ride off a cliff into a lake.
