Adapted from Nathaniel Hawthorne's American classic, Joe May's film for Universal stars Margaret Lindsay as Hepzibah Pyncheon, the cousin and fiancée of Clifford Pyncheon, played by Vincent Price. She pines for him for two decades, as he serves out a prison sentence for a family murder he didn't commit. A relentless family curse, meanwhile, evades evil cousin Jaffrey Pyncheon (George Sanders), who searches the property for hidden family riches.
