The Great McGinty
US (1940): Political/Comedy
The Great McGinty was originally written by Preston Sturges in 1933 as a vehicle for Spencer Tracy. Sturges sold it to Paramount for ten dollars on the condition that he would be able to direct it. His directorial debut tells the story of a corrupt politician (Brian Donleavy) who comes to power using every dirty trick in the book. Naturally, when he cleans up his act, he's run out of office. Sturges's cast of comic characters (who would soon be recognized as his fabled stock company) and his Oscar®-winning dialogue make this a must for Sturges fans. The cast includes Muriel Angelus, Akim Tamiroff, William Demarest, Allyn Joslyn, Louis Jean Heydt and Harry Rosenthal. (amctv.com)
