My Favorite Wife
US (1940): Comedy/Romance
In this marital screwball comedy, newly married Cary Grant discovers his first wife (Irene Dunne) wasn't lost seven years earlier in a South Seas typhoon as was presumed. Grant, Dunne, and producer Leo McCarey try to repeat the success of The Awful Truth (1937). The pace is fast and the situations absurd, but the cast keeps everything humming delightfully. Later remade as Move Over, Darling (1963) with Doris Day and James Garner (which began life as the unfinished Marilyn Monroe vehicle Something's Got to Give). McCarey, who produced and co-wrote the story of My Favorite Wife, was also planning to direct it, but after he was seriously injured in an automobile accident he turned the direction over to Garson Kanin. The RKO Radio cast includes Randolph Scott and Gail Patrick. (amctv.com)
