Brian Aherne plays a gentle and considerate man with an ungrateful and hurtful son (Louis Hayward). Struggling his way out of the Manchester slums, the father becomes a wealthy novelist, but his attempts to win his son's affection only result in cruel responses. Both men wind up in the trenches during World War I, where the son is given one last chance for redemption.
