Waterloo Bridge
US (1940): Romance/Drama/War
A heart-tugging wartime romance begins with officer Robert Taylor's memories of the woman he loved and lost. Just before he departs for the trenches of WW I, Taylor meets and falls for ballerina Vivien Leigh. She loses her position to bid him adieu, and later, in desperate straits, sinks to prostitution, walking the Waterloo Bridge. There, after the war, she encounters Taylor, who she believed had been killed. She hides her new profession and picks up their life anew though she comes to believe all will resurface. Leigh gives a heartfelt performance (perhaps fueled by her new romance with Laurence Olivier), which followed on the heels of her success in Gone With the Wind (1939). Mervyn LeRoy directs for MGM; cast also includes Virginia Field, Maria Ouspenskaya and C. Aubrey Smith. (amctv.com)
