US (1941): Musical

Jeff Lambert (Bing Crosby) grows up near Basin Street in New Orleans, playing his clarinet with the dock workers. He puts together a band, the Basin Street Hot-Shots, which includes a cornet player, Memphis (Brian Donlevy). They struggle to get their jazz music accepted by the cafe society of the city. Betty Lou Cobb (Mary Martin) joins their band as a singer and gets Louey (Eddie "Rochester" Anderson) to show her how to do scat singing. Memphis and Jeff both fall in love with Betty Lou. Victor Schertzinger directs der Bingle for Paramount (who else?). Supporting cast includes Carolyn Lee, J. Carrol Naish and Bing's ol' buddy from the Paul Whiteman Band, Jack Teagarden. (IMDb)
