Blood and Sand

US (1941): Drama

Blood and Sand (1941) was not the first film version of the Vicente Blasco Ibañez novel, Sangre y arena. The first was in 1922 and starred Rudolph Valentino. Three more would follow, including a 1989 version starring Sharon Stone.

Rouben Mamoulian directs this story of a bullfighter who enters into a love triangle that may be as dangerous as his career. Tyrone Power plays Juan Gallardo, a successful toreador who leaves his faithful childhood sweetheart (Linda Darnell) for wealthy seductress Dona Sol (Rita Hayworth). It's a choice that proves his undoing. Dramatic visual effects give the film, shot in black and red Technicolor, a passionate radiance. Supporting cast includes Alla Nazimova, Anthony Quinn, J. Carrol Naish, John Carradine and Laird Cregar. (20th Century-Fox) (amctv.com)
