A down-on-his-luck farmer makes a deal with the devil for seven years of prosperity. When Mr. Scratch (Walter Huston) comes to collect, orator and hero of the common man Daniel Webster (Edward Arnold) comes to the rescue. Based on the short story by Stephen Vincent Benét. William Dieterle directs an RKO cast that also includes Jane Darwell, Simone Simon, Gene Lockhart, H.B. Warner, Anne Shirley and James Craig. The film features an Oscar®-winning score by Bernard Herrmann, who is considered as one of the greatest film composers to ever work in Hollywood. This was the only Academy Award® he was ever awarded.
