The Flame of New Orleans

US (1941): Romance/Comedy

Marlene Dietrich lights up New Orleans as European adventuress Claire Ledoux in this madcap romance. Sultry and elegant Mme. Ledoux shows up on the Mississippi and makes herself flagrantly available. Millionaire Roland Young is drawn to the flame and it looks like the rugged seaman Bruce Cabot doesn't stand a chance. But when Mischa Auer shows up from Europe claiming that Mme. Ledoux isn't the lady she pretends to be, she pulls off a series of intricate stunts to place the blame on her fictional cousin. Giraud can't help being confused. Meanwhile Captain Latour is waiting patiently, very patiently. The Universal supporting cast also includes Andy Devine, Laura Hope Crews, Franklin Pangborn and Anne Revere. French director René Clair's first Hollywood picture after leaving France with his wife and son at the start of WW II. (amctv.com)
