Hold Back the Dawn

US (1941): Drama/Romance

In a backstage glimpse at director Mitchell Leisen at work, a hard-luck romantic plot is told by Charles Boyer to director Leisen for the 500 bucks he needs to help his girl, Olivia de Havilland. Boyer relays his plight as a hopeless refugee from a war-ravaged Europe holed up in a Mexican border town. Trouble-making Paulette Goddard tells him that U.S. citizenship can be had by marrying an American. Luckily for Boyer, the innocent, trusting de Havilland is in town leading a school trip. She falls deeply for Boyer and she touches his heart as well. But then Goddard turns up and spills the beans. The cast also includes Victor Francen, Walter Abel, Curt Bois, Rosemary DeCamp and Nestor Paiva. (amctv.com)
