Mercy Island

US (1941): Drama

William Morgan directs Republic's Mercy Island, a melodrama with more plot than the average potboiler. A young couple take an old friend fishing in Florida and the male of the couple, Warren Ramsey (Ray Middleton), forces them into the dreaded keys where one can get lost easily. Seems this mild-mannered young male is psychotic (funny, no one noticed before) and they come upon a fugitive from justice, Dr. Sanderson (Otto Kruger), who is really innocent, and our Warren at first becomes obsessed with bringing him back to trial and clearing his name, and then as he descends into schizophrenic dementia, he decides to persecute him. In the course of things he alienates his wife and friend (accusing them of an affair) and goes steadily down hill until nature in the form of a hungry alligator is called upon to set things right and eat the nasty man.
