Penny Serenade

US (1941): Drama/Family

One of the saddest tales put in front of the camera is played by consummate actors Irene Dunne and Cary Grant, who had a lighthearted hit with The Awful Truth (1937). Dunne and Grant are about to part, having endured the tragedy of losing a child by miscarriage and then, after struggling to adopt, raising a beloved daughter who also dies. Just when they (and the audience) are about to succumb to grief, a small ray of light appears. George Stevens directs for Columbia; cast includes Beulah Bondi, Edgar Buchanan, Walter Soderling and Ann Doran.(amctv.com)
